In SamSabrina's Memory

As Robbin mentioned when she spoke at the Memorial, SamSabrina was a voracious reader from an early age. In fact she was reading before she entered kindergarten with Mrs. Ultan at Grafflin, thanks to her inquisitive personality, her determination and the support she received with Tara (speech therapist who spoke at the Memorial) and her time at New York School for the Deaf during preschool. As many books as we borrowed from the library we bought twice that number because she loved to go back and re-read and use them as reference. And although over the years we donated many many books, she still had a library at home that took up most of her closet and overflowed into other areas of our house. Knowing how critical reading was to children, and especially a child who was deaf I could never say no to a book. And SamSabrina read all types of books.
In honor of her love of reading and learning, and for the time she spent working and visiting the library, her books will be donated to the Chappaqua library. Thanks to Robbin and Martha from the library, many of her books will be put into circulation so that others may have the opportunity to find joy,
adventures and knowledge on the pages.
The Chappaqua Libary is currently undergoing renovations but when it is done the books will join the stacks.

You lose
yourself
in books.
You find yourself there too.
Science Scholarship
An award/scholarship has been created in SamSabrina's name. The award, along with a $1000 stipend will be presented annually to a Horace Greeley High School Senior in June during the senior awards ceremony at Horace Greeley High School* in Chappaqua.
Thank you for your donations to support this memorial.
The SJK Award and Scholarship for the Pursuit of Scientific Knowledge and Truth has been created in honor and remembrance of SamSabrina Kaplan '19. The SJK Award will be given annually to a Horace Greeley High School Senior who exhibits the same pure and fierce passion and love for exploring the remote corners of science and the mathematics that SamSabrina was known for.

The recipient has an extraordinary understanding of math and science - particularly physics (astrophysics, theoretical) and has participated in Science Research. Furthermore, the student demonstrates the ability to 'think outside the box' in all academic arenas.

This award will recognize not only the student’s superior work throughout their high school years, but more importantly, the ways that they have gone above and beyond, both in and out of the classroom, to demonstrate:
-
Their enthusiasm for learning and the pursuit of knowledge
-
The joy of exploring and discovering the great questions of the universe
-
And the boundless quest for hardcore scientific facts.
In addition, the recipient has exhibited perseverance and devotion and certainly no less importantly, is highly respected and admired by faculty and peers alike.
Memorial Tree Planting
SamSabrina volunteered at Westmoreland Sanctuary*. She helped with the animals and shared information with visitors. The Directors of Westmoreland have been so very welcoming in allowing us to add a tree to their gardens in her memory.

Planting of the red bud tree took place on the afternoon of May 15, 2019. The tree was planted in an enclosure (to keep it safe from deer) behind the main building.
All are welcome to visit at any time. There are some great hiking trails on the property.
Annual Chess Tournament
On December 27, 2018 Peter Barkman,
SamSabrina's chess teacher/coach held the
First Annual SJK Chess Tournament in her honor.
It was a USCF rated tournament held at the Croton Chess Club.
The Second Annual Tournment was held on January 11, 2020.
Check back for the date of next year's tournament to be held in Chappaqua.
Space
As I have mentioned to many of you I am working on how to send some of SamSabrina's ashes into space. There are a few different options. I am researching and this may take awhile before it is done as this has just started to really be an option and it is still quite expensive. I will keep watching as this develops and keep you all posted here.
